  The Memory Will Last Forever

After the final examination,I received a letter from my aunt and uncle who invited me to stay with them for a fortnight. The news brought me a restless night. The next morning at ten,I reached their home and I was kindly received by them. They prepared a very nice and airy room for me.Just coming inside,on a small table I found a vase of roses---my favourite flower.I thanked them for their kindness. When they told me to take a rest,I really could not do so.My attention was drawn by the charming and picturesque scenery outside the window. If I were an artist I would have drawn a wonderful picture of it.

Every morning we took a walk in the neighbouring hills where we could enjoy the fresh air and sweet songs of the birds. We gathered wild flowers here and there among the bushes,I found it full of fun.In the afternoon I mostly spent my time reading or writing, for I was shut in the house by the terrible beat. The evening was the only time we could go to swim together.I improved my swimming during those two weeks.

Though the fortnight passed away at lightning speed, the memory of it will last forever

Who is the first gold medal in Beijing Olympic Games?

The suspense over who will win the first Olympic medal and in which event is really a interesting thing. Chinese officials are determined to make sure China, as the host country, wins the first gold of the Games. The women's 10m air rifle - which includes two Chinese medal favorites - has its final scheduled at 10:30 am on Aug 9 and should end about 20 minutes later.

But if Du and Zhao are too far behind in points going into the final, the rumor says, organizers will delay the last ten shots of the final while the weightlifting final goes on as planned so China can secure the gold.

I think the first gold medal must belong to we Chinese, let wait this moment together.

  Waiting for an Interview

The words "part-time job" always bring back to me the memory of my first interview for a part-time job.

That afternoon a great number of nervous and excited young interviewees were waiting for their turns in the hall. Some were walking back and forth, others talking about their nerves. I had many butterflies in my stomach. I tried to predict the interviewers' questions and how I should give my answers. Though I had made full preparation for the interview, I still had some fears, for it was my first interview.

At last, it was my turn. I got up and walked quickly towards the door. I felt my face red and my heart beat fast. Suddenly a voice said in my mind,"Calm down! Calm down! Try your best and you will pass. "Encouraged by these words, I got my confidence and began my interview smoothly.

  Waiting for an Interview

Last summer vacation I had my first interview in my life in order to get a part-time job.

That afternoon I stood in the hall with a great number of young interviewees. We were waiting for our turns to be interviewed. All of us were nervous and excited.

My heart beating fast, I entered the room. At the moment I met with the smiling eyes of the interviewer, I gained my confidence and began my interview smoothly.

Back in 1986, during my last year of high school, there was a radio trivia contest to win tickets to a concert. I didn’t have much money, but I really wanted to go see this particular group, so I sat myself beside the radio one Monday morning, phone in hand, and waited. Now, my head has always been overflowing with completely useless information –probably more so at that time in my life– so I knew I stood just as good a chance as anybody else. Finally, they asked the question: “What was David Bowie’s theatrical rock-star persona backed by the Spiders from Mars?” I dialed as quickly as I could, but I was not the first, and so didn’t win the tickets. For three more mornings, I did the same, each time knowing the answer, but failing to be the first to call. On that Friday, however, the question was much harder: “Whose band did Canadian singer Gowan borrow for the recording of his Strange Animal LP?” This time I won the tickets.

I was proud of my accomplishment, elated by that vindication of the sheer width and breadth of the mostly impractical data stogged tight into my brain. It seems a little foolish in retrospect, but the accumulation of knowledge was –for me– the most distinguishing facet of my self-identity.

Back then, information was far less transitory. I remember reading and studying endlessly, trying to retain every nugget of information I could, whether it was useful or not. Now, I have become lazy. When a question is asked and I don’t know the response, a quick search on the Net will generally take me directly to the right information. The question answered, the details then drop away from my mind, and I usually forget it completely. I suspect most people do this nowadays, relying upon the Net far more than memory. When someone dials a friend from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, are they really choosing their most knowledgeable friend, or simply the fastest with Google? Who would you phone?
