Jacques Perrin's OCEANS is easily the best political documentary shown on Chinese screen this year, with the added benefit of beautiful oceanic scenaries to please the eye. About two thirds of the film were dedicated to showing the audience how oceans has nurtured its residents, the sea turtles were cute, the whales mysterious, the seals were sun-bathing, and even the sharks had a gentle side. The rest of the film, on the other hand, was some brutal murder scenes of those lovely creatures by none other than us humans. The message was clear enough.
However, the film did little to explore the intricate nature of the relationship between man and the ocean, and it may be confusing for some if they want to find out exactly what we have done to the sea, except for the agonizing death of a small shark after its fins were cut off.
What I found uncomfortable was the way in which OCEANS has deliberatly blurred the human faces, if the oceans were so self-contained, the existence of us, with our powerful technology to do almost everything, would be just like GOD. And the things we do to the sea are more like divine intervention. The sharp and precise editing style of the film has created an oceanic symphony, but it didn't help with Perrin's justification for us to be GOD. This 90-minute documentary was more like a trailer for real OCEANS, we still need more, if Perrin's up to it.
